Open Call to Artists

Tue Oct 6, 2009, 7:33 PM
Shortly after three eight-year-old boys were found murdered in West Memphis, Arkansas, local newspapers stated the killers had been caught. The police assured the public that the three teenagers in custody were definitely responsible for these horrible crimes. Evidence?

The same police officers coerced an error-filled "confession" from Jessie Misskelley Jr., who is mentally handicapped. They subjected him to 12 hours of questioning without counsel or parental consent, audio-taping only two fragments totaling 46 minutes. Jessie recanted it that evening, but it was too late -- Misskelley, Jason Baldwin and Damien Echols were all arrested on June 3, 1993, and convicted of murder in early 1994.

Although there was no physical evidence, murder weapon, motive, or connection to the victims, the prosecution pathetically resorted to presenting black hair and clothing, heavy metal t-shirts, and Stephen King novels as proof that the boys were sacrificed in a satanic cult ritual. Unfathomably, Echols was sentenced to death, Baldwin received life without parole, and Misskelley got life plus 40.

For over 14 years, The West Memphis Three have been imprisoned for crimes they didn't commit. Echols waits in solitary confinement for the lethal injection our tax dollars will pay for. They were all condemned by their poverty, incompetent defense, satanic panic and a rush to judgment.

But there's still hope for them, and you can help.

Please join Sovereign Collective in an effort to raise legal defense funds for the West Memphis Three. WM3, an exhibit showcasing the works of multiple artists concerning the theme of the West Memphis Three, will be held on November 5th, 2009 at the Sovereign Collective gallery. All artists are invited to participate. Any works submitted will be displayed to be sold and the proceeds will be donated to the WM3 legal defense fund. All submissions must be recieved by November 2nd, and as stated, donated to the effort of this exhibition.

I have been tattooing since late 2003. While much of my art tends to lean towards the dark and macabre, I enjoy working in many different styles and try to stay versatile so that I can better approach a wide variety of projects. I feel that the interaction between myself and many clients has exposed me to images and disciplines that I may not have encountered on my own. I value that interaction and my ultimate goal with each tattoo is to render the client's idea as closely as possible to their original vision, while still maintaining the traditional elements of tattooing necessary for longevity. In additon to tattooing, I enjoy working in virtually every other artistic medium. I have always loved art and it has been an integral part of my life. I have had the good fortune of learning from many amazing artists through my still evolving career. However, it is in my current company that I feel the most privileged. The crew of Sovereign Collective is the most dedicated, talented, and appreciative group of artists that I have ever seen, and it is an honor to be part of something so unique.

This is James Gilks (owner of SerialKillerCalendar.com and editor of Serial Killer Magazine). I am putting together a new Serial Killer Art book (called "THE ART OF MURDER - INSIDE THE WORLD OF SERIAL KILLERS, CRIME ART AND MURDERABELLIA”;) that is going feature the best true crime artists on the planet. I would love you to be in it. If you are interested, we would need samples of the crime based art you have made and a little bit about yourself. Could you write an article about yourself, your art and your views on crime art (why you do it, why you feel people are interested in serial killers, etc)? I want to give all the artists involved as much room in the book as possible so there are no length restraints. The book also features a lot of murderabellia so if you happen to have a collection yourself, we would love to know about it and your feelings on the subject. The book will be over 300 pages) and is going to cost a fortune to print but I am excited to get it published soon. This is really going to be something amazing. Never before has anyone attempted a book like this that specifically deals with crime art and murderabellia from every angle (not just from the side of people who dont understand it or hate it). Other contributors to the book include (Nico Claux, Johnny Machine, Hart Fisher from the original Jeffrey Dahmer comic book series, Matt Verges, Mark Stinson, Tod from MurderAuction.com, Ken from Supernaught, Macabre, Joe Coleman, Jonathan Davis, Jack Malebranche, Chuck Hodi, DaisySeven.com, Bill Moseley, Andrew D. Gore from Satans Sideshow, the Ed Gein Collection and a TON more). If you are interested, we would love to also include your art and article in a upcoming issue of Serial Killer Magazine. Let me know if you are interested. You can best contact me at my personal email address (madhatterdesign@gmail.com).
